Earlier known as manic depression or manic depression disorder, bipolar disorder is a mental health condition which can cause extreme mood swings, including emotional lows as depression and emotional highs like mania or hypermania. During the lows, you might feel very low and lethargic, while you might be overly active, euphoric and full of energy during the highs. 

Episodes of mood swings cannot be predicted, as they may occur rarely or multiple times a year. Some may experience emotional symptoms between episodes, while some may not. This characteristic of bipolar disorder makes it even more difficult to diagnose and is often present with other disorders. Unlike the usual mood swings experienced, people suffering from bipolar disorder have major struggles with judgment, behavior, sleep, ability to think clearly, and energy, which hamper their ability to function in daily life. 

While the cause of bipolar is unknown, it is believed that several factors can trigger an episode, including but not limited to:
