As a complex group of neurodevelopmental disorders that involve persistent challenges with social communication, repetitive behaviour, and restricted interests, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong disorder. Due to the impacted development of the brain, people suffering from autism have an altered perception that causes problems with social interaction and communication, and also includes patterns of behaviour that are limited and repetitive in nature.

While you may notice no physical differences, people with autism think, reason, and learn very differently than other people. Varying greatly by individual, the term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity, creating an assorted degree of challenges throughout life.

Children often show symptoms within the first year, which is why diagnosis of autism occurs during early childhood. This early treatment can make a big difference in their lives, helping them to live independently with minor difficulties in high functioning autistic cases, while others may require more constant support and assistance.

We, at Cambridge Medical Centre, understand the struggles arising from mental health conditions and continually work towards providing you with the treatment you may require. In hope of being your safe space, we encourage you to reach out to us if you are concerned with your child’s development and fear they may be on the spectrum. We are here to provide you and your child with the support you may require.
