A very common misconception about eating disorders is that they are a lifestyle choice. Typically developing during one’s teenage years or early adulthood, eating disorders are a very serious illness relating to severe disturbances in people’s eating behaviours and associated thoughts and emotions. Being preoccupied with their body weight, shape, size and food negatively impacts your health, your emotions and your ability to function in all areas of your life.

Some of the most common eating disorders are bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and anorexia nervosa, wherein the focus on one’s weight results in a significant impact on your body’s ability to receive the appropriate nutrition.

Affecting people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, genders and body weights, eating disorders can harm your digestive system, bones, teeth and mouth, and heart, and lead to other diseases as well. It is a scary disorder to manage alone, and unfortunately, many people suffering from the same may not think they require any treatment.

In case you are worried about you or your loved one’s health, urge them to talk to a mental health professional, to help them acknowledge the illness and by expressing your concerns and desire to listen. We at Cambridge continually strive to be your safe space and open our doors to anyone that may be suffering from the same.
